What To Do After Microneedling: Aftercare Basics
If you’ve just had a microneedling treatment, congratulations! You’re taking an amazing step towards achieving the skin of your dreams.
Now that you have some new-found confidence in your skin, let's get you caught up on aftercare. Read on to find out!
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny needles to puncture the top layer of skin and stimulate collagen production. The procedure can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, treat acne scars and hyperpigmentation, improve texture and tone, and more. It’s also often paired with other treatments like chemical peels or laser resurfacing for even better results.
Post-Treatment Care
After your microneedling treatment, it’s important to take certain steps to ensure you get the best possible results from your procedure.
It goes without saying that your health care provider knows best, so do follow the provided post-treatment guidelines to a T. Of course, if there is a doubt, always ask questions!
To further prepare you with what to expect, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Immediately after the treatment, if you choose to wash your face, it is advised to use only lukewarn water and stay away from products. If you must do so, make sure to use a very gentle cleanser a few hours after the treatment.
- Don’t apply any makeup or moisturizers until the day after treatment. When you do apply them, make sure they are non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) products.
- Use gentle cleansers when cleaning your face.
- Avoid harsh chemicals like exfoliants and astringents during this time as they can further irritate the treated area.
- Avoid sun exposure for at least 24 hours after the treatment. Wear sunscreen whenever you go outside, using a broad-spectrum product with an SPF of at least 30.
- Avoid activities that can lead to excessive sweating for at least 48 hours after the treatment. Sweating may cause irritation or redness in the treated area.
- Take lukewarm showers instead of hot ones during recovery to help protect your skin from further irritation or damage.
- Don’t pick at any scabs or flakes that form on your skin post-treatment; let them fall off naturally as this will help promote faster healing.
- Avoid swimming pools, steam rooms/saunas, hot tubs/Jacuzzis for one week after treatment as these environments can increase risk of infection.
Contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience any signs of infection such as swelling, redness, itching or rash around the treated area; they will be able to advise on next steps if necessary.
